Between 13 and 18 March 1838 an ice jam on the Pest–Buda Danube drowned the low Pest side. Contemporary counts: 2,281 houses destroyed on the Pest bank, 827 badly damaged, 1,146 left intact. Peak around 15 March. The flood is why Pest rebuilt in stone and why the later Chain Bridge and the 1873 unification sit on a trauma.
