Why winter rain often does more

Winter ground is usually wetter and cooler. Plants use less water then. Less water also evaporates. More of the same rain can reach the river. In high summer, dry soil and growing plants take more water first. Less water then flows over the land into the river.

Rules of thumb

Use these to read a wet outlook — not to predict a sailing-day level.

  1. After a long dry period, the first roughly 10 mm may mainly soak the soil. Do not expect much change at the gauge before that.

  2. Look downstream after about 1 day Basel–Maxau, 1–1½ days Maxau–Kaub and ½–1 day Kaub–Cologne; Austrian Danube events spanned 60–118 hours, so there is no honest fixed Danube clock.

  3. A routed rain pulse can briefly raise a gauge. Baseflow is the slower supply of stored water. It decides where the level settles.

That is the calculation you have just read. The licence turns this panel from a list of links into a daily reading. It still stops where the evidence stops.

Rainfall forecast is provided by a commercial forecast service. Waterlogged reports on how an amount of rainfall has historically affected the water level. This historical information is provided for illustrative reasons and should not be used for any prediction.

Rain is context, not a prediction of a river level. Nothing on this page turns millimetres of rain into centimetres at a gauge, and no status anywhere on this page moves because rain is forecast.

The official services we link to forecast the water level at a gauge. That is not a promised depth of water under your ship, and none of them publishes one.

No German federal product covers the Austrian Danube. Austria's own navigation service publishes a Kienstock page in English. Its graph also shows a forward series.

On that graph the measured line is labelled The German word on the Austrian graph for the measured water level.. The forward one is labelled The German word on the Austrian graph for the forward-looking values.. The forward values run several days ahead. Austria notes that Kienstock forecasts are meant for low-water situations.

Then stop looking for a target level, because there is not one. Austria publishes a An Austrian low-water reference level. It gives no depth a ship can use. figure for Kienstock but no A depth an authority aims to keep available for ships along a stretch. figure to pair with it. A level without a depth cannot be turned into a target for your ship, and we will not invent one.

What you can read is the direction of change. You also know that locks keep this stretch full anyway.

What this document is. BfG runs the river model many times over. Each run uses a different possible weather sequence taken from the historical record. The chart shades in the spread of those runs. It answers "where is this gauge likely to sit", not "what will it read on Thursday".

How the chart is laid out. Time runs left to right in weeks, not days. The upright scale is centimetres at Pfelling's own The fixed zero point for a gauge's centimetre scale. It can sit above the riverbed.. This page uses the same scale, so 290 cm means the same thing on both.

What the shaded bands mean. Each band covers a share of those model runs. A wide band means the runs disagree and the week is genuinely open. A narrow band means they agree. The band is the answer — the middle of it is not a prediction.

What to do with it. Find the week beginning 28 September. If the whole band sits below 290 cm, the outlook for your week is uniformly short. If 290 cm falls inside the band, the honest answer is that nobody knows yet. If the whole band sits above 290 cm, the outlook is comfortable — which still is not a promise about your afternoon.
