Baba Vida, the last Bulgarian Danube fortress

Baba Vida castle, the surviving medieval fortress on the Bulgarian bank, held the river against Magyar, Byzantine, Ottoman. Vidin was a late-medieval tsardom of its own, then an Ottoman stronghold. The 2013 New Europe Bridge (Vidin–Calafat) is the first Bulgarian–Romanian road bridge west of Ruse.
