The Iron Gates

The Đerdap is the one place on the lower Danube where the river is squeezed between rock rather than spread across a plain. The Iron Gates I and II barrages impound several hundred kilometres of it, and the 1972 lake is why the shoreline your ship passes today is not the shoreline the towns were built on.

The fortress at the gorge mouth

Golubac · 14th–15th century

Golubac (Galambóc), a ten-tower river fortress on the Serbian bank at the west end of Đerdap, was fought for by Hungarians, Ottomans and Serbs because it taxes the gorge. A 15th-century siege here is a river-choke fight. The modern visitor centre sits beside towers that once collected the same toll a cruise ship now photographs.
